2020 APLD Silver Medal Winner

Though this North Berkeley family longed to utilize their back garden, the sloping brown lawn and cramped deck was far from inviting. A combination of meandering pathways, new gathering spots and a lush Mediterranean plantscape provided the draw to get them outside to enjoy the newly renovated garden. The expanded redwood deck provides ample space for family dining, while golden decomposed granite creates curving pathways, leading to separate “garden rooms.” The teenagers might play ping-pong in the lower garden while the adults enjoy a quiet moment in the upper patio. Edging along the walkways is a playful, swooping Corten steel strip on one side, while elegant, flat-topped stones edge the opposite side. And everywhere one turns are the vibrant purples, chartreuse and dusky blues of a resplendent garden filled with Heuchera, Euphorbia, and various succulents which grow harmoniously beneath a large Monterey Cypress canopy.
